Maria also learns of Kino's world fame as an explorer and map maker. And as their missionary priest, Kino was always a staunch defender of their rights to their lands and to be free from slavery. For over 30 years, the Salgado family has lead cabalgatas or pilgrimages on horseback to honor the memory of Padre Kino by retracing the trails ridden by him.ĭuring her journey, Maria hears about the missions and ranches that Kino founded beyond the Spanish frontier with the help of the O'odham people. Maria is joined on the trail by her father, José Luís Salgado and her uncles and Arizona rancher Richard Collins.
